Having Problems with Andriod 12 on OnePlus9? Here’s a Solution

OnePlus announced earlier this week that it was starting to roll out Android 12 to the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro. This is the first major software release following the merger of the OnePlus and OPPO teams, and OnePlus fans have a lot riding on it. However, it appears that not everything has gone as planned.

There appear to be a number of issues plaguing devices as a result of the update, and in one case, someone’s phone downgraded their processor description from the Snapdragon 888 to an older chipset. This was only discovered in the settings panel, but you can see why this sort of hiccup shouldn’t happen.

As with most vexing bugs, OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro owners got to work figuring out what was causing all of the problems. And it appears that there is a solution, but it is neither pretty nor enjoyable. Instead, you’ll need to wipe your phone completely. Furthermore, you should not restore the OS settings during the setup process.

Not that you should ever have to do this, but I factory reset my OnePlus 9 Pro just now after updating to Android 12. It is so, so, so much better. This is much more usable. — Adam Conway (@AdamConwayIE) December 9, 2021

It appears that there is something strange going on when migrating from OxygenOS 11 to ColorOS 12. We’re not sure what the issue is, but users have reported significantly improved performance after performing the clean wipe. XDA member Adam Conway went so far as to detail his experiences with the update, claiming that it made his phone “much more usable.”

This is a very frustrating situation, as no one should have to completely wipe their phones after such an update. Instead, if nothing else works, it should be a last-ditch effort. However, something is clearly wrong with the underlying code, which simply “doesn’t like” what OxygenOS 11 includes when updating to ColorOS 12. OnePlus should release an official fix in the coming weeks, but if you can’t wait, simply wipe your phone and start over.
